19 Apr 2009 Comparison Canon EOS 500D vs Nikon D5000

I am looking for my 1st digital SLR camera for a period of time. The only two manufacturer in my consideration list is Canon and Nikon. For Canon, EOS 450D and EOS 1000D is very suitable for the entry-level or the beginner of digital SLR camera. For Nikon, D60 and D90 is the better choice so.

Just after few weeks I decide to buy my 1st digital SLR camera, the two manufacturer announced their new digital SLR camera: Canon EOS 500D, and the Nikon 5000D. Before Nikon released the Nikon 5000D, Canon EOS 500D is my first choice rather of 1000D, 450D, D60 and D90. But afterwards, I indecisive to buy Canon EOS 500D or Nikon D5000. That’s why I have to make a comparison between them according to what I actually want on the digital SLR camera.

Now, talk about what is the great feature of each digital SLR camera!

Nikon D5000

The most significant feature of Nikon D5000 is the 2.7? tilt and swivel LCD monitor. This is the first ever LCD on a digital SLR which can rotate 180 degrees. This kind of novel LCD enables you to compose stunning photographs in angles which you can not take with any other digital SLR cameras.

Canon EOS 500D

The most significant feature of Canon EOS 500D is the video recording ability. Canon EOS 500D can record 1080p full HD videos at 20fps and 720p video at 30fps with AF. Although only 20 frames for full HD video recording, but it still great with 30 frames for non-full HD video recording.

For me, I still prefer Canon EOS 500D. May be the variable angle LCD monitor of the Nikon D5000 is not enough to allure me, while the great video recording ability of Canon EOS 500D is more attractively. Other than that, 15.1 megapixels is still a big advantage of Canon EOS 500D compare to the 12.3 megapixels of Nikon D5000. And the rest, is just bagatelle and not so important for me on choosing a digital SLR camera.

If you are looking more for comparison on this two incredible entry-level digital SLR camera, Canon EOS 500D and Nikon D5000, you can refer to here for feature comparison table.

I am also in the market to buy my first DSLR and have narrowed it down to the Canon 500D and the Nikon 5000D. Both have video capability and neither will match my Video camera so that is not a huge deciding factor. Regarding the 15 vs 12 Megapixels it should be a no brainer right? Wrong. Comparison sites that have taken controlled test pics at different ISO/s and allow you to really enlarge and look at the detail, well, to me the Nikon with its 12 MP actually looks better and with noticably less noise at higher ISOs. Very confusing but a decision based on Megapixels alone may not be the best criteria for photo detail and quality. Overall, it seems you cant go wrong with either of these cameras.

Choosing a DSLR should not be as simple as looking at the nice to have functions and megapixels. It is much more than that.

Eg. Build quality and ergonomics, availability and accessibility of critical functions, speed – focus, buffer, etc., the system eg. lens availability, image quality.

The Nikon and Canon have the same image quality, 12 or 15 MP is not serious, I prefer 500D because of the Full HD video recording, but the 30 minutes hd video needs a 16 GB free space!

Could you have a look at the crop examples at high ISO. Does it mean that Nikon has less noise and more details???

For me i really preffer CANON EOS 500D because you can trust canon even before and also this body is awesome and the features that they add.

Very difficult choice … 15.1 MP of Canon 500d seems better, but if you look at detailed reviews, you will notice that all reviews give better ratings to the Nikon D5000 for a better and bigger sensor (same as Nikon D90), a better 11 point focus (against a 9 point focus on Canon 500d) and better low noise pictures in low light conditions. These features are more important to take good photographs than a 15.1 MP res or HD recording (also there in D5000).

Go for a Nikon D5000 body with a Nikon Nikkor 18-105 mm VR lens and you can do 90% of your photography with this combination.

Nikon D5000 has also won the DIWA Gold Award this year (beating Canon 500D and other DSLR’s introduced this year) .. http://www.diwa-awards.com/press/Documents/nikon-d5000-diwa-gold-press-release.doc

    Happy Deciding !

I’m thinking of purchasing a D-SLR and I’ve narrowed it down to the Canon EOS 450d and the Nikon d5000. Regardless of the price, what do you recommend? I’ve looked at heaps of reviews and they’re so close in specs and overall value.

EOS450d vs Nikon D5000, for me i would suggest u buy D5000 as it is newer technology, but of cos, now you may go for EOS500d or even the latest EOS550d…

EOS450d vs Nikon D5000, D5000 has lesser noise at high ISO (as i view the comment online, cos i never use nikon before), and D5000 got video capability…

    but for me, i will buy EOS450d, because i am a canono supporter… :D

Most experienced photographers realize that unless you have some specialized needs (big money telephotos, multiple flash setups, etc.), all the big brands make camera systems produce almost same results. this difference really holds for advanced and professional users who are looking for cutting edge (read: expensive) performance – the kind
that comes from $5000 bodies and lenses.

Camera body constitutes half of the story. The other one falls on the lenses. So, a hobbyist should look after the other deciding factor – lenses, made by the manufacturer of the camera.

On this count, Nikon 18-200 VR II is an all purpose lenses for almost 90% users (price around $500) – alternative one may go for Nikon 55-200 mm lens at a fantastic price (price around $200). coupled with bundled 18-55 mm Nikon VR, this is an excellent package. Canon 28-200 mm lacks the build quality and pricey.

So, I ll go for Nikon.

To me Nikon’s (especially D5000) features are no issue to me, i think Nikon is trying to bridge between a standard camera with a DSLR, that’s why they come up with such features found in a standard camera, also we must agree-the handling is better with double main dial. I need no those, for this reason i prefer Canon for better performance and actually i prefer Canon’s color result.
